Testing

TESTING REQUIREMENTS

  1. Color belt students receive an email invitation when the student is deemed ready to test by the instructor (usually a minimum of 12 classes).
  2. Blue and black belt testing is twice a year.
  3. Green belts and higher must have jacket trim and patches on the uniform in order to test.  
  4. Students must have good concentration on techniques.
  5. Students qualified to take a test must pay a testing fee.

NOTE:  Prolonged absence from class (6 months for color belts, 12 months for black belts) lose their rank and start over as WHITE BELTS.  They are eligible to move up the belt system faster than a beginner depending on their class attendance and training.

GREEN

BROWN

RED

BLUE

  2. Why are you taking Tang Soo Do?
  3. Why are forms important in improving your martial arts, physically and mentally?
  4. What is the meaning of red belt?
  5. Required:  Form 8 & 9, Self-defense 1-17, chuck  1-19
  6. Possible break: reverse chop, elbow, jumping side kick

BLACK – 1st dan

  1. What are the 5 major vital striking points?  Temple, bridge of nose, philtrum, solar plexus, groin
  2. What are the 7 Tenets of Tang Soo Do?
  3. What are your responsibilities as a black belt?
  4. What is the meaning of blue belt?
  5. Submit an essay (at least 600 words) describing how Tang Soo Do contributed to you, personally.
  6. Required:  Form 10, Self-defense 1-20, staff 2, staff defense 1-5, fighting staff, knife defense 1-5
  7. Possible break: ridge hand, reverse chop speed break, 2-combination kick, double board back kick

BLACK – 2nd dan

  1. Submit a written instruction of an original form.  Form must take about 60 seconds to perform, and you must be able to explain the moves.
  2. Required:  Form 11, Self-defense 1-30, chuck 2, knife 1, knife defense 1-10, staff defense 1-10
  3. Possible break: ridge hand speed break, double board side kick, roll w/ combination break, reaction multiple breaks

BLACK – 3rd dan

  1. Submit a written exam in Korean.  Be prepared to break a cement brick.
  2. Required:  Form 12 & 13, Self-defense 1-40, chuck 3, knife 2, staff 3 & 4, short staff 1, short staff self defense
  3. Possible break: cinder block

John Lescalleet is the creator of the Chung Shin Tung Il Hyungs in 2000, in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. Chung Shin Tung Il means mind (mental) concentration.

Jang Song Kye created the Nahanchi Hyungs (Nae Bu Jin in Chinese) over 900 years ago in Ha Buk, China. Nahanchi means Iron Horse and are represented by a warrior on a horse. It was created for the warrior’s ground fighting tactics.
